Contentment sounds simple, but it can be surprisingly hard to practice when we’re constantly surrounded by messages telling us what we’re missing, what we should upgrade, and what we should want next.

I’ve learned that contentment isn’t about settling or never wanting anything again. It’s about being able to look at your life as it is right now and recognize that you already have more than enough to be happy.

Here are 10 things I wish everyone knew about contentment.

Contentment doesn’t mean you stop wanting things. You can want something and still be okay without it.

You can enjoy nice things without needing more of them. Appreciation and constant upgrading aren’t the same thing.

Contentment makes “no” feel less like deprivation. You’re not constantly thinking about what you’re missing.

You don’t have to use every dollar you have. Having money left over can be the point.

You can be grateful and still have goals. Contentment doesn’t mean giving up on improving your life.

Sometimes “enough” is a decision, not a number. There will always be a newer, bigger or better version.

You don’t need to keep upgrading a perfectly good life. Sometimes your life is working just fine.

You can appreciate something without buying it. Seeing something beautiful doesn’t create an obligation to own it.

More options don’t always create more happiness. Sometimes having fewer choices makes it easier to enjoy what you already chose.

Wanting less can make your money feel like more. When you don’t constantly need something new, your existing income has more room to breathe.
