Paying yourself first sounds simple, but it can be surprisingly hard to actually do.

When you’re trying to cover bills, groceries, unexpected expenses, and everything else life throws at you, saving money can feel like something you’ll get to if there’s anything left over. The problem is, there usually isn’t. That’s why paying yourself first is such an important habit.

Instead of waiting to see what’s left at the end of the month, you set aside money for your future before you have a chance to spend it. And you don’t have to start with a huge amount. Even $5, $10, or $25 from each paycheck can help you build the habit and prove to yourself that you can save consistently. Starting small is often much easier than you think, especially when you make it automatic.

The goal isn’t to completely change your finances overnight. It’s to start treating your savings like a bill that deserves to be paid, too. In my latest YouTube video, I’m breaking down 30+ ways to pay yourself first so you can get ahead and stop panicking whenever the unexpected happens.
