About TBW
THE BROKEN WALLET is a personal finance blog dedicated to simplifying money topics and helping others make better decisions with their finances.
I’m a personal finance writer and video content creator with more than 15+ years of experience. Over the years I’ve helped many people improve their money – this includes people I know personally, and those I’ve never met.
When I began my journey as a writer in 2005, creating money-related content never entered my mind. I wanted to be a freelance writer, but I didn’t have a niche.
In my first year as a paid writer I took any and every assignment available to me, including those dreaded keyword articles. These were popular at the time, yet incredibly low paying. I thought, “Hey, at least I’m writing, right?”
I quickly realized that I would NEVER make a living as a writer at this rate. I made the decision to seek higher paying gigs, at which point I applied for an assignment writing personal finance articles. I didn’t know much about the topic, and thankfully, the publisher didn’t require a background in finance. As long as I could research and put together a coherent sentence, the job was mine.
I accepted without hesitation and started writing about debt, credit, saving money, mortgages and other evergreen financial topics. This opportunity was a win-win. I discovered a hidden passion for personal finance…and quickly learned that I was making A LOT of money mistakes.
I applied what I learned to my own life, and the rest is history…
After scoring high on my junior high literacy test, I considered a career as either a writer or an English teacher. Writing won because unlike teenagers, the keyboard doesn’t talk back. – Vee
