Enough means your bills don’t control your life. It means you can handle an unexpected expense without panicking. It means you’re able to save for the future while still enjoying the present. Most importantly, it means you’re no longer chasing more simply because everyone else is.
The problem is that “enough” keeps moving for many people. A raise leads to a nicer car. A nicer car leads to a bigger payment. A bigger payment creates the need for an even bigger paycheck. Before long, you’re earning more than ever but still feel like you’re falling behind.
Real stability comes from creating a gap between what you earn and what you need to live. The smaller your needs, the more freedom you have. You can save more, worry less, and make decisions based on what matters to you instead of what your monthly bills demand.
This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pursue a higher income. Earning more is a good goal, because realistically, you can’t coupon clip your way out of an income problems. However, don’t let your lifestyle grow so quickly that your financial peace disappears along the way.
